Pounamu Meanings

The Meaning Behind the Taonga

Pounamu is a treasured stone of Aotearoa New Zealand, valued for its natural beauty, strength and deep cultural significance.

For us, every piece begins with the stone itself. The natural colour, markings and shape help guide the carving, and we take care to create each taonga with meaning and purpose.

Meanings can vary between whānau, iwi and individuals, and the meaning given to a taonga is often deeply personal. The meanings below are some of the commonly associated ideas behind these traditional forms.

Toki

The toki is traditionally associated with strength, courage, determination and leadership.

It can represent the ability to overcome challenges and move forward with purpose.

A toki is often given as a meaningful gift for someone beginning a new journey or facing an important chapter in their life.

Hei Matau

The hei matau, or fish hook, is associated with strength, abundance, prosperity, safe travels and connection to the sea.

It is often worn as a symbol of good fortune and safe journeys.

Koru

The koru is inspired by the unfurling fern frond and represents new beginnings, growth, renewal and the journey of life.

Its unfolding form can also represent peace, harmony and the continuing connection between generations.

Roimata

Roimata means tear and is often associated with grief, remembrance, healing and emotional strength.

A roimata can be a deeply personal taonga, representing the memory of someone special or acknowledging a difficult journey while looking towards healing.

Niho

Niho means tooth and is traditionally associated with strength, courage and protection.

Its simple, strong form makes it a meaningful taonga for someone who embodies resilience and determination.

Kawakawa Leaf

The kawakawa leaf is connected with healing, wellbeing, protection and connection to the natural world.

Kawakawa has an important place in Māori tradition and is widely recognised as a plant with healing properties.

Whale Tail

The whale tail is associated with strength, protection, guidance and a connection to the ocean.

It can also represent respect for the natural world and the powerful relationship between people and the sea.

Heart

The heart represents love, connection, compassion and affection.

A pounamu heart can be gifted to express love, friendship, gratitude or a lasting connection between people.

Pounamu

Beyond the individual designs, pounamu itself carries its own significance.

It is a taonga of Aotearoa, treasured for generations. Each piece is unique, with its own colour, pattern, inclusions and character.

For us, part of the beauty of carving pounamu is allowing the natural stone to influence the finished piece rather than trying to make every piece identical.

Every piece has its own story.

A little note from us

We believe a taonga becomes even more meaningful through the person who wears it and the story behind why it was given.

Whether it is marking a new beginning, celebrating a relationship, remembering someone special or simply carrying a piece of Aotearoa with you, we hope your pounamu becomes part of your own story.
